Resting among the breath-taking vistas of Wānaka, our latest project shows how style and purpose can work together seamlessly. Commissioned by clients seeking to switch their Auckland apartment from home to holiday haven, the couple wanted to build a new home in the south where they could spend more time. The task was clear: to craft a home that not only embraced the scenic splendour of its surroundings but also provided ample space for cherished moments with family and friends.
With a mild slope running east-west and the prospect of future surrounding developments, our focus was on elevating the home to capture unobstructed views of the lake and mountains while ensuring optimal sunlight throughout the day. The result? A 316sqm abode that strikes a balance between form and function. How did we do it? We focused on key design elements such as spatial planning and flow, strategic placement of forms, careful material selection and selection of elegant interiors.
For instance, to break up the length of the home and to reflect the line of the mountains, we considered the roof form. And to allow the architectural form to shine we were restrained in our use of exterior materials. As they say, less is often more. We collaborated closely with the clients to perfect the natural interiors and made sure the spaces allowed its owners to chase the sun around the home, while taking in the views.
We took into account all of the details, like how to bring sunshine into spaces even if the neighbouring property is built taller. And we made sure the guest area had a space of its own. The outdoor room can screen off the prominent winds and give shade when the sun gets too much. It’s one of those homes that just works. It’s not a masterpiece that isn’t to be touched. It’s there to be lived in. A home away from home.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this project was collaborating with our clients, whose passion for aviation inspired the affectionate nickname “the runway” for the central hallway – a playful nod to their aviation backgrounds and the fact that Bryce has just earned his pilot licence!
From inception to completion, this project was a pleasure to curate, fuelled by creativity and collaboration every step (or jet!) of the way.
